Dear SCCS Families,

I hope this note finds you and your family completing a successful school year and preparing for a relaxing summer break.  I am writing to inform you about a new task force that I am forming to support our district in addressing declining enrollment.

Santa Cruz City Schools elementary enrollment has been declining over the past several years and is projected to continue declining.   We are committed to including our families and community in a process to make good decisions about facilities and staffing given our changing student population.  The purpose of this task force is to make recommendations to address declining enrollment. We aim to balance elementary campus enrollment, and optimize facilities and staffing in our elementary schools to best serve our students and be responsible to our community.

Our goal is to protect and preserve all our learning communities. As families are leaving our community and impacting our school enrollment, it is our responsibility to ensure stability within the District. We must also be mindful of our responsibility to taxpayers and stakeholders for their investments in our schools by making conscientious decisions for the best use of human resources and facilities resources.

The task force will be a collaborative team of community and staff members. Each SCCS elementary school and Branciforte Small Schools will be represented by parents and school staff. Other participants include three Trustees, the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, and the Director of Elementary Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment.

The Superintendent’s Elementary Enrollment Task Force Meetings are open to the community. The meetings are scheduled at the Santa Cruz County Office of Education in the Tech Room at 400 Encinal Street, Santa Cruz, Ca 95060, as follows:

Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at 6:00pm – 8:00pm
Thursday, June 13, 2019 at 6:00pm – 8:00pm
Thursday, June 20, 2019 at 6:00pm – 8:00pm

Following the task force meetings will be a study session by the Board of Education, for which the date is still to be determined.

Have a wonderful start to summer.

Best regards,

Kris Munro

Superintendent
